Frequently asked questions
What is a chiropractor?
A chiropractor in Australia is a 5 year university educated primary health care practitioner, registered and regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Other practitioners regulated by AHPRA are doctors, nurses, physios and more.
So, what does this really mean?
Firstly, as a primary health care practitioner, you don’t need a referral from your GP or a specialist to see a chiropractor. Chiropractors have extensive training in the diagnosis of neuromusculoskeletal (nerve/muscle/bone/joint) problems and can be your first person to speak to when you have a problem. Chiropractors can refer for medical imaging like X-rays, ultrasounds or MRIs when required, or refer you to the appropriate practitioner if they feel you’ll be best helped elsewhere.
What does a first visit look like?
During a first visit, it’s a lot of talking and testing, and the direction the appointment goes in depends a lot on your current condition and history. Taking a full history is extremely important, and allows your chiropractor to more accurately diagnose your problem. The more useful information you can provide, the more specific and effective your treatment will be. Testing might involve observing your posture and movement, the strength of your joints and muscles, the sensation in your nerves or your reflexes – it all depends on what you’re seeking help for.
Why are you asking about one area when my problem is elsewhere?
Chiropractors, like all health care professionals, have a range of different treatments at their disposal. There’s no one magic pill for every problem. Soft tissues (muscles/tendons/fascia) require different treatments to joints. Some treatments are very gentle, some are a bit more forceful. Some chiropractors use hand held tools to assist, or special areas of their treatment table to provide a drop or extra resistance. Everyone is a bit different.
As for me, I do prefer to use both hands-on adjustments (the joint cracking you might have seen or heard of) and various soft tissue techniques. I have a huge variety of different skills and vast experience. For patients who know what has worked in the past – let me know and I can likely perform something similar. For new patients who are a bit apprehensive or unsure – I’ll always explain everything before I actually do it, and can offer multiple options if something isn’t comfortable.
Generally speaking, the adjustments are NOT painful, the soft tissue can be. I’ll never do anything beyond what you can tolerate, and your consent to treatment is extremely important.
